The Kansas Sunshine Coalition for Open Government presented
its third Friend of Open Government Award to Rep. Jo Ann
Pottorff, R-Wichita, during its annual meeting Oct. 24 in
Wichita.
Rep. Pottorff was selected to receive the award because of
her commitment to passing legislation that opened state
advisory committee and task force meetings to the public.
"Government should not be conducted in the dark. Far too
often, governmental meetings in our state are held behind
closed doors, causing justifiable suspicion that the public's
business is being transacted without the public's scrutiny,"
said Sunshine Coalition President John Lewis. "Rep. Pottorff
clearly believes that governmental meetings should be open,
and we congratulate her for defending the public access
rights of every Kansas citizen."
Rep. Pottorff is chair of three legislative committees -
General Government and Human Resources Budget, Arts and
Cultural Resources and State Building Construction. She also
serves on the Higher Education committee.
Past recipients of the Friend of Open Government award
include the late Sen. Janice Hardenburger, R-Haddam and Rep.
Carlos Mayans R-Wichita.
