The Kansas Sunshine Coalition for Open Government presented its first-ever Friend of Open Government Award to the late Sen. Janice Hardenburger of Haddam at the coalition's annual meeting Jan. 26 in Topeka.

Also named as a co-recipient was Rep. Carlos Mayans of Wichita, who was out of town and will receive his award at a later date.

As chairwoman of the Senate Elections and Local Government Committee, Hardenburger, was instrumental in reforming the Kansas Open Records Act last year. She died Aug. 31, 2000.

"This piece of legislation typifies the way Sen. Hardenburger went about her job," said Senate President Dave Kerr, who accepted the award for Hardenburger. "We had a problem. Sen. Hardenburger found a direct, common-sense solution to that problem. That's the way she dealt with everything she touched as a member of the Legislature. She was beloved by members of both parties because she dealt so fairly with people."
